About
The sound
Akylla is an Athens DJ whose selections connect soulful and deep house with percussion and the broader roots of dance music. His early listening came through his parents’ interest in Latin music, jazz and rock, followed by tapes sent by relatives in New York. He encountered the city’s house culture there in 1987 and returned to Athens in 1994 with the intention of sharing its underground sound. In 2000 he launched Breathe Deep Athens.
In his 2018 Last Day Deaf interview, Akylla named Tony Humphries, Louie Vega and Timmy Regisford among his inspirations. He placed selection above any particular playback format and described an approach that lets records develop, with layered blends during longer sets. His Breathe Deep Athens Mixcloud archive brings together extended selections tagged soulful, deep and Afro house, alongside shorter radio recordings.
