The sound

AMÉMÉ is the Benin-born, Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Hubert Amémé Sodogandji. His Afro house draws on West African rhythms, French-language listening and the electronic music he encountered in New York and Berlin. He created One Tribe at Brooklyn’s House of Yes in 2017 as a space for African-inspired house, later extending the project into One Tribe Records. “Patchido,” featuring Don Bello Ni, draws on a chant from Benin, while “Kaleta” features a traditional children’s chant sung by his mother. His studio work also connects different scenes: “Ando High” with Tom & Collins combines Latin vocals and tech-house elements with his percussion and synthesizers. Other collaborations and remixes include Jamie Jones on “Pliva” and Omah Lay’s “Understand.” Through One Tribe, he gives that musical exchange a home for his own records and releases by other artists.
