Anthony Barrios

About

The sound

Anthony Barrios is an Australian-born percussionist and live performer with Hispanic roots whose work is closely connected to Ibiza's club culture. His practice centres on hand percussion drawn from African, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian traditions, using congas and related instruments to add live rhythmic dialogue to electronic sets. Rather than reproducing a fixed part, Barrios responds to the DJ, the room and the pulse of each track, shaping accents and polyrhythms in real time. Pacha's artist profile establishes the same Ibiza-based performer credited on the island's Flower Power programme and describes a career built through live collaboration with club artists. His contribution brings the physical presence of an instrumentalist into dance music without collapsing that role into a DJ identity. The result is a performance language based on timing, improvisation and the interaction between acoustic drums and amplified electronic rhythm.
