Ape Drums

About

The sound

Ape Drums is the Mexican-American DJ and producer Eric Alberto-Lopez, born in Houston and based in Miami. He began DJing and producing as a teenager, with an early background in breakdancing that connected his musical interests to movement and rhythm. Caribbean-influenced electronic music and dancehall formed an important part of his first releases. Bashment, issued on Slow Roast Records in 2014, introduced that approach, bringing dancehall rhythm together with the scale of electronic club production. His relationship with Major Lazer developed into membership of the group in 2019, alongside a continuing solo career. More recent solo work moves towards Afro house and Afro tech, bringing global rhythmic influences together with funk and electronic production. His listening catalogue includes Nobody Knows and Anything (Ya Ya), while his personal music hub presents collaborations such as 111 with JAMIIE and Move Move with Robbie Rivera and Rooster & Peralta.
