Basement Jaxx

About

The sound

Basement Jaxx is the London electronic duo of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe. They established Atlantic Jaxx in 1994, drawing on Chicago and New York house while developing a sound with room for soul, reggae, disco and more unruly club influences. Their recordings combine dance rhythms with distinctive vocal performances, often shifting between several musical ideas within one track. Their debut album Remedy arrived in 1999 with tracks including Red Alert, Rendez-Vu and Bingo Bango. Rooty followed in 2001, bringing Romeo and Where’s Your Head At into the catalogue. Those releases established an approach in which compact songs, heavily worked samples and powerful basslines could coexist with the energy of a DJ set. On Kish Kash, released in 2003, they extended that collaborative approach with guests including Lisa Kekaula on Good Luck, Dizzee Rascal on Lucky Star and Siouxsie Sioux on Cish Cash. Atlantic Jaxx remains part of the duo’s recorded history, connecting their early house releases with the broader range of their later work.
