Black Coffee is the stage name of Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, the South African DJ, producer and songwriter whose sound connects deep house with jazz, kwaito, African percussion and soul. After studying jazz and developing his craft in Durban and Johannesburg, he established Soulistic Music and released the self-titled debut album in 2005. Albums such as Pieces of Me and Subconsciously expanded that language internationally; Subconsciously won the 2022 Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Collaborations with Drake, Alicia Keys, Usher, Pharrell Williams and others have carried his Afro-house perspective into global pop without separating it from its South African roots.
