Carl Craig

About

The sound

Carl Craig is a Detroit producer and DJ associated with the city's second generation of techno. Early work as Psyche and BFC appeared through Derrick May's Transmat and Fragile labels. His musical reference points extended beyond techno to Prince, Kraftwerk, Art of Noise and hip-hop, helping shape a catalogue spread across several recording identities. Craig founded Planet E Communications after the earlier Retroactive label. His aliases offer distinct routes through that catalogue: Paperclip People developed a dancefloor focus, while 69 explored more experimental electronic music. Innerzone Orchestra's Bug in the Bassbin brought rhythmic experimentation and jazz influences into the work. Planet E also became a home for recordings by artists including Moodymann, Recloose and Alton Miller. His 2017 album Versus credits Francesco Tristano, Les Siècles and François-Xavier Roth. The 2025 soundtrack Desire: The Carl Craig Story gathered recordings from across his aliases for Jean-Cosme Delaloye’s documentary. Meditations followed in 2026 as a six-track collection, with pieces named Meditation One through Meditation Six.
