Darque is the stage name of Molapo Malatji, a South African DJ, producer and curator whose deep and Afro-house work links ancestral rhythm to spacious electronic production. Born in Limpopo in 1992, he grew up with South African house compilations from Soul Candi and House Afrika and began producing at thirteen, building technical confidence through regular DJ sets and studio work. His breakthrough came through writing and producing Garth and G-Rel’s Inhliziyo Yami in 2012, followed by the 2013 collaboration Ready for the World with Black Coffee. Those records established a sound shaped by patient percussion, warm low end, layered keys and melodic vocal lines, while his later releases have moved between deep house, Afro-house and Afro-tech without losing their emotional centre. Darque’s catalogue includes the albums Rare Earth Elements, This Is Africa and Must Be Africa, along with collaborations involving Zakes Bantwini, Sjava, Da Capo and other South African voices. He also co-founded the Kunye movement and the U’R music television project with mentor Shimza, and his Thru & Thru collective extends that curatorial role through radio, releases and the Darque Experience. The artist’s own catalogue and current releases show a continuing practice of writing, remixing and presenting music that can hold both intimate listening and large dance floors. His performances are recognised for a patient build, a soulful pulse and an openness to African musical histories, giving each set a sense of place while remaining connected to the wider international house community. Darque’s work keeps the human voice and the groove at the centre, using polished production as a bridge between local heritage and global club culture.
