Derrick Carter

About

The sound

Derrick Carter is a Chicago house DJ, producer and label founder. He began playing disco records at family gatherings as a child and became involved in Chicago’s underground during his teens. Work in specialist record shops, including Gramaphone, and sets at clubs such as Shelter and Smart Bar helped shape his approach to selection and mixing. House remains the foundation of his sets, but disco, soul and jazz are also part of his musical vocabulary. His studio work includes recordings as Sound Patrol and the Sound Patrol Orchestra, alongside releases and remixes under his own name. He co-founded Classic and established Blue Cucaracha, extending his musical interests into label work. Mix releases such as Cosmic Disco and Pagan Offering document his DJ approach, while remixes for Tortoise connect his production with music beyond the house scene. His website’s music archive brings together D.J. Bang Presents Syncompatico, Oneiro — Shhh, and Unreleased BHQ Remixes and Rarities Vol. I.
