Derrick McKenzie is a UK-born drummer, producer, songwriter and DJ whose musical identity is built around rhythm, groove and the meeting of live percussion with club sound. He started making beats as a child, formed a band by the age of ten and was working professionally by fourteen, moving through projects including Candyland, Freaky Realistic and Urban Species before joining Jamiroquai in 1994. His drumming became part of the band’s funk and acid-jazz vocabulary across albums such as Return of the Space Cowboy, Travelling Without Moving, Synkronized, A Funk Odyssey, Dynamite, Rock Dust Light Star and Automaton, as well as extensive international touring. Alongside the band career, McKenzie developed a distinct drummer-DJ format in which he plays live drums over disco, nu-disco, soul, funk, soulful house, jackin house and other groove-led styles. The result is energetic but musical: rhythmic detail from the kit meets the lift of a selector who understands how to build a room. His production catalogue includes the feel-good Boogie Bus Music release Hey, Boo!, collaborations with Josephine Peppink and Zoran Jevtic, the Yoyoka project Time Travel, work with Michael Gray and Mark Lower, and recordings with Oded Nir, Angela Johnson, Joy Rose, Sarah Ozelle and Matt Johnson. McKenzie has also collaborated with Purple Disco Machine, Fernando Rosa, Richard Earnshaw, Dr Packer and other artists across the funk and house spectrum. Through Boogie Bus Music and his Rhythm Sessions broadcasts, he keeps developing a space where musicianship and dance-floor movement reinforce one another. His sets carry the warmth of classic funk while staying open to contemporary disco and house production, making the drummer’s physicality part of the DJ experience rather than an ornament. McKenzie’s work is grounded in feel, timing and an instinct for collective movement, with live playing, teaching and radio extending the same generous musical conversation.
