About

The sound

DJ Jazzy Jeff is Philadelphia DJ and producer Jeffrey Allen Townes, whose career connects turntable performance, hip-hop and soul production. He became known alongside Will Smith as DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, while developing a separate body of work as a producer and selector. His solo performances carry the same emphasis on records, rhythm and the craft of mixing. In 1990 he established A Touch of Jazz in Philadelphia. The studio became a base for a team of producers and contributed to records by Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild, including their debut albums. Jeff also produced for Smith's solo career and served as an executive producer on Willennium. His independent output includes the 2019 series It's 52 Beetz in a Year, shared through his own SoundCloud account. The project offered a regular stream of instrumental ideas alongside the wider catalogue of mixes and releases associated with his solo work.
