DJ Pete is the Berlin artist Peter Kuschnereit, a DJ and producer whose work is closely associated with deep, dub and exploratory techno. He began working at the Hard Wax record store in 1991 and developed a long-running place in Berlin’s club culture, with the city’s record-collecting tradition shaping his approach to selection and sound. Under the Substance name he has built an influential production catalogue, while the Scion partnership with René Löwe (Vainqueur) connected his music to Chain Reaction and the later Scion Versions label. His productions and remixes have engaged with artists including Juan Atkins, Regis, Kessell, Orphx, Robert Hood, Rhythm & Sound, Monolake and Shed. Behind the decks, he is known for patient, highly detailed mixing that can move between hard-edged techno, dubstep, house and reggae without losing a strong rhythmic thread. The live projects TR-101, with Sleeparchive, and Scion, with Löwe and at times vocalist Paul St. Hilaire, extend that interest in improvisation, sequencing and analogue texture. Kuschnereit’s musical practice joins a deep historical knowledge of techno with a continuing appetite for new sounds, making DJ Pete and Substance two connected expressions of a Berlin-rooted electronic artist.
