About

The sound

DJ Spoony is a British DJ and broadcaster whose career developed alongside UK garage. Born in Hackney and raised in Stoke Newington, he began DJing as a teenager, playing soul, hip-hop, swingbeat and early house. Those broad selections gradually led him towards the energy of house and US garage. At pirate station London Underground he met Mikee B and Timmi Magic, and together they formed Dreem Teem. The trio championed early UK garage, moving to KISS in 1997 and later to BBC Radio 1. Spoony also became closely associated with the Twice as Nice club night, linking his broadcasting work with the dance floor. His solo career includes Garage Classical, the 2019 project that reworked garage songs with orchestral arrangements and guest vocalists.
