About

The sound

Francis Mercier is a Haiti-born, New York-based DJ, producer and label founder whose melodic house blends Afro, Caribbean and tech-house influences. He co-founded Deep Root Records and developed the Emvafaya alias to explore a deeper, more Afro-centric palette. Tracks such as “Sete,” “Premier Gaou,” “Kamili,” “Sauti,” “Baianá (Boa Noite)” and “Lakay” show the progression from early club releases to culturally rooted collaborations. Mercier’s music has involved artists including Amadou & Mariam, Black Uhuru, Emmanuel Jal and Nitefreak, while his label work supports a broader artist community. His album Lakay (Home) brings together a larger collection of songs. Mercier also developed Solèy, named for the Haitian Creole word for sun, drawing on musical traditions from the Caribbean, Africa and the Levant.
