About
The sound
Function is the techno project of New York-born, Berlin-based DJ and producer Dave Sumner. His work connects solo recordings, collaborative projects and Infrastructure New York, the label he runs alongside his DJ and live performances.
He began releasing records in the mid-1990s through Damon Wild’s Synewave and his own imprint. After meeting Regis in 1996, the two worked as Portion Reform on Downwards. His move to Berlin in 2007 brought a renewed focus on Sandwell District with Regis and Silent Servant, leading to the collective album Feed Forward in 2010.
His solo album Incubation appeared on Ostgut Ton in 2013, followed by Games Have Rules with Vatican Shadow on Hospital Productions in 2014 and Existenz on Tresor in 2019. His personal catalogue also includes Awakening From The Illusory Self, Green EP and Aeternum (Existenz).
His collaborations extend to LSD with Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell, whose Process EP arrived in 2017. He contributed Berghain 07 to the club’s mix series in 2015 and relaunched Infrastructure New York as a platform for new artists and solo material. Those activities place recorded mixes, label curation and studio work alongside one another.
