Jan Van Angelopoulos is the composing alias of Greek drummer Giannis Angelopoulos, who began using the name during his studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory. His music draws on rebetiko and Greek folk traditions alongside afrobeat, funk, dance music and pop. A long-standing member of the VASISTAS collective, he has written for Argyro Chioti’s AIMATA, The Libation Bearers, Frogs and Halepas, as well as works by Stereo Nero Dance Co. His recorded catalogue carries this theatrical and collaborative practice into a separate body of albums, singles and scores. It includes the Halepas soundtrack, To Talanto, Monomania in Stereo Field and All We Got Is Time, the latter made with Costis Christodoulou and Harris Lambrakis. Other collaborations include releases with Fotis Siotas and the Greek-language Kako Poiima with Pavlos Pavlidis. Across these projects, composition connects his background as a drummer with song, ensemble playing and music made for the stage.
