Kenny Dope is the Brooklyn DJ and producer Carl Kenneth Gonzalez, a central figure in New York house music and one half of Masters at Work with Louie Vega. AllMusic traces his beginnings to neighborhood block parties and mobile DJ work in the mid-1980s, before studio production became the route through which he connected underground club culture to a much wider audience. With Vega, he developed Masters at Work into a production and remix partnership whose records joined house, garage, disco, Latin rhythm, soul and hip-hop technique. Gonzalez also built distinct solo identities: The Bucketheads produced the crossover club hit The Bomb!, while Dopewax became an outlet for his beat-driven productions and label work. The Nuyorican Soul project expanded that language through live musicians and collaborations, demonstrating how his sampling instincts could sit beside jazz, salsa and orchestral disco traditions.
