Kenny Dope

About

The sound

Kenny Dope is the Brooklyn DJ and producer Carl Kenneth Gonzalez, one half of Masters at Work with Louie Vega. He began with neighbourhood block parties and mobile DJ work before developing a studio practice that connected New York club music with a wider audience. Within Masters at Work, his grounding in hip-hop joined Vega’s freestyle background, with salsa, disco and house providing shared musical foundations. His work also extends through solo projects and aliases. As The Bucketheads, he released the 1995 crossover hit The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind), while Dope Wax provided an outlet for productions and rhythm tracks. The Nuyorican Soul project brought a further dimension to the partnership with Vega. Alongside production and remix credits, his compilations and mixes have explored hip-hop, disco and 1980s boogie, reflecting the breadth of the records behind his DJ practice.
