Louie Vega

About

The sound

Louie Vega is a Bronx-born DJ and producer whose music brings house into conversation with salsa, jazz, gospel and soul. His career developed through New York’s club scene in the 1980s before expanding into studio production and remixing. In 1991 he worked with Marc Anthony on Ride on the Rhythm, connecting his club background with a vocal collaboration. His partnership with Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez as Masters At Work produced projects including Nuyorican Soul and Our Time Is Coming. Vega Records and the Elements of Life ensemble gave him further outlets for work with singers and live musicians. Elements of Life’s Eclipse arrived in 2013, followed by Louie Vega Starring… XXVIII in 2016 and NYC Disco in 2018. The Recording Academy awarded his EOL mix of Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly the 2006 Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. Starring… XXVIII later received a Best Dance/Electronic Album nomination in 2017. His own archive continues the connection between DJing and production through vocal, salsa and house interpretations of tracks such as Music & Life and The World Is a Family.
