About

The sound

Martin Ikin is a UK DJ and producer whose career in electronic music dates to 1991. He has recorded under names including Soul Purpose, Indigo, MIGrant and DJ Mayhem. His musical background also includes jazz-piano study, studio engineering and work leading jazz-funk bands, connecting technical production experience with instrumental performance. He founded Soul Purpose Records in 2003 as an outlet for his own productions. Early collaborators included singers Juliet Roberts, Elisabeth Troy, Angie Brown, Mary Pearce and Bryan Chambers. His influences span Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and Oscar Peterson alongside house and techno figures such as Mr. Fingers, Marshall Jefferson and Kevin Saunderson. His later catalogue includes Hooked and Headnoise featuring Dope Earth Alien, followed by Gravity with Hayley May. Feel the Same with The Melody Men and 4u extend that recording history, while the Tech House Rush DJ mix presents his selections in a longer format.
