Ossie

About

The sound

Ossie is an East London DJ and producer whose music grew from an early immersion in R&B, hip-hop, garage and grime. He started producing at twelve, initially studying the way The Neptunes built their tracks, before developing an interest in UK funky, deep house and electronic music. Releases for Hyperdub, Madhouse, Wolf Music and Brownswood sit alongside his own SuperCali output. His approach is especially clear on To Make You Smile: the title track uses percussive rhythms, Hoping and Coping draws on disco, and Freedom brings in garage. In a 2019 interview, he described using Ableton, Maschine, a MicroKorg and Novation’s Launchpad to develop those ideas, including playing synth rhythms into the music rather than programming every phrase. That period also produced Yeah We Feel It for Madhouse and Better Days for Sense Traxx. His SuperCali catalogue extends through Space Odyssey, Ossie Baba and Real World, with further collaborations alongside Ki Pharaoh on The Beat and Craze.
