About

The sound

Papa Nugs is the DJ and producer Joe Nugent, whose musical development connects UK bass music with house, trance and electro. His early listening included garage, jungle and bassline, and he began organising parties while studying in Leeds. Those nights gave him space to develop as a selector before moving to London and focusing more closely on production. The Endo EP brought together electro and breaks, while Jacky Boy reflected a growing interest in progressive and trance sounds. In a December 2023 interview, he described experimenting with the weight of bassline inside a trance rhythm, drawing on older records without keeping their styles separate. He began a Rinse FM residency in February 2023 and developed the Suckerpunch label as another outlet for that approach. His wider output includes the Chunkers EP on Big Saldo and an official remix for Confidence Man. Collaborations with Luke Alessi and The Trip add to a catalogue that moves through house, breakbeat, techno and electroclash, carrying the rhythmic force of his earlier UK club influences into newer productions.
