Ricardo Villalobos is a Chilean-born DJ and producer who grew up in Germany and became known for minimal electronic music. Childhood interests in congas and bongos, followed by the electronic pop of Depeche Mode, formed part of his early musical background. His 1990s recordings appeared through labels including Placid Flavour, Playhouse and Perlon. Alcachofa in 2003 and Thé au Harem d’Archimède in 2004 established a longer-form catalogue, followed by Fabric 36 and Vasco. With Max Loderbauer, he developed Re: ECM, released in 2011. The pair used recordings by artists including Christian Wallumrød, John Abercrombie, Bennie Maupin and Arvo Pärt as source material, building new pieces through sampling, looping and electronic reworking. Manfred Eicher supervised the album’s mastering. That collaboration connects Villalobos’ minimal techno practice with ambient electronics and improvised music, showing a different scale of composition alongside his work as a club DJ.
