About
The sound
Yasmin Shahmir is a British DJ and singer whose songwriting grew out of years spent selecting hip-hop, R&B, funk and soul. The records she played became a reference library for the studio, while her own music drew on the sound of 1990s trip-hop, reggae and jungle. She approached singing as an extension of that musical background. She made Finish Line in early 2010, then connected with BBC 1Xtra’s Twin B and signed with Levels Entertainment and Ministry of Sound. Light Up the World brought her together with Shy FX and Ms Dynamite. Remixes by Freemasons and MJ Cole took her songs into further rhythmic settings, from slower trip-hop to garage. Her later mix work includes An Eastern Affair for AZEEMA FM in 2021 and the Slow Radio series, with published episodes spanning 2024 and 2025.
